Top 6: Databases for licensefree pictures (CC0)

March 28, 2019
The thing with images and the damn usage rights on the Internet is always such a thing... Which one can be used for what and how? With our Top 5 list of free image databases (all images published on them are subject to the CC0 license), these worries are a thing of the past.

1. pixabay
Pixabay is a creative community that shares images and videos free of copyright. All content is published under the Pixabay license, which allows safe use even for commercial purposes. An indication of the source is voluntary. In total, Pixabay says it offers over 1.6 million free images and videos provided by a generous community. A free registration is necessary only for the pictures with the largest possible resolution, whereby the second largest for most intended purposes is already sufficient. The authors are also welcome to buy a coffee now and then.

2. pexels
Pexels offers thousands of free stock photos for download and every day new high-resolution photos are uploaded to the website. All photos are manually selected from the uploads of their own users or imported from websites with free free images. It is always ensured that all published images are of high quality and published under Pexels license (CC0). This means that all images can be used for private as well as commercial purposes and can be modified in any way. Mentioning the photographer or Pexels is not necessary, but of course always appreciated.

3. pxhere
Pxhere is the only website listed here where a free registration is mandatory first for the image download. However, this does not mean that it will be complicated or even suddenly chargeable. Once registered, you can download as many images for free as you want, all under the CC0 license.

4. unsplash
Unsplash offers over 850,000 high-resolution photos, free of any usage restrictions (usable for personal and commercial purposes). More specifically, Unsplash grants you an irrevocable, non-exclusive, worldwide copyright license to download, copy, modify, distribute, perform and use photos from Unsplash for free. The images are also provided by a generous community of photographers and artists. Attribution is not required, but definitely encouraged.
